Wisconsin man fined for burning mesothelioma-causing asbestos waste
Daniel Carey, 26, was fined nearly $4,400 for illegally burning waste from a demolished building without taking proper precautions for dealing with asbestos. The Lafayette County Circuit Court cited Carey following an investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Asbestos is a hazardous substance that must be disposed of in an approved manner to prevent health risks to workers and the public. Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to serious illnesses like lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that targets the lining in the chest and abdomen.
